Footnote 23:

Unlike most professors of anatomy, Jacob Sylvius (Jacques duBois) of Amiens (1478-1555) did not rely on others to carry out dissections while he lectured; but to judge from the present passage, he performed demonstrations only with animal cadavers. See O’Malley 1964, pp. 47ff. No doubt as a consequence of attacks on him by his former professor, Vesalius deleted this tribute from his second edition and substituted meo marte, claiming that he had learned animal dissection “on my own.”
