The opening sentences down to this point are revised as follows in the 1555 edition: “As I have little doubt, now that the account of individual bones and cartilages is complete, that many readers will, like the students in our schools, ask me their number, I shall now in passing enumerate the bones and cartilages in such a way that one may readily grasp how they are summarized in a definite number. In a person of advanced age whose epiphyses have completely fused to their bones, it will be possible to number them more or less as follows.”
