A standard recitation of the Rosary would consist of ten Hail Marys and one Our Father, the whole cycle repeated five times as the devotee meditates on five mysteries from the life of the Virgin. This devotion took hold in the late 15th century and was still very popular in the 16th; there would have been a big market for the craftsmanship of such rosary makers. See Winston-Allen 1997.
