Several Greek words for “pitcher” were used in an anatomical sense for the various cavities of the body, e.g. a)ggei=on, a)/ggoj, ku/toj, teu=xoj. Gk. ko/gxoj and kogxa/rion were used of anything like a mussel shell (not to be confused with Eng. conch), e.g. the hollow of the ear, the socket of the eye, the knee-pan.
