Paraphrased from Galen, De usu partium 3.121.11 ff.: “...these bones are fitted together so skilfully as to leave nothing wanting for accuracy and perfection. In the first place, although no one of the eight carpal bones greatly resembles any other in shape or size, they nevertheless achieve such close union in their articulations that it is hard to tell how many of them there are. In fact, unless you carefully scrape away the ligaments and strip off the protecting membranes, you will think they are all one bone.” (tr. May 1968, p. 131).
