(Chapter 9) Footnote 51:
Ferdinandus Balamio (fl. ca.1515), physician to Pope Leo X, translated Galen’s De ossibus into Latin; Rodolpho Pio of Carpi was made cardinal in 1536. Vesalius’ irate reference to Cardinal Pio, who lived until 1564, was deleted from the 1555 edition of the Fabrica. See O’Malley 1964 pp. 278, 439 n. 79-80. The language used here is echoed in Vesalius’ speculation about the unavailability of the lost books of Galen’s De anatomicis administrationibus; see Bk. 2, Ch. 19, second paragraph.
